MICHAEL SHEEN’S father has spoken of his pride at the way his Hollywood star son is showcasing Port Talbot to the world through his epic homecoming production The Passion.
Meyrick Sheen said he was “amazed” as he watched more than 6,000 people line Aberavon seafront as the 72-hour non-stop community performance was launched on Good Friday.
Frost/Nixon actor Michael spent two years devising The Passion, which concluded its second day last night with a re-imagining of The Last Supper featuring the Manic Street Preachers and classical singer Paul Potts.
And among those watching the drama was Michael’s Canadian actress girlfriend Rachel McAdams.Co-director Michael is playing a kind of modern-day Messiah – a schoolteacher who has re-appeared in the town with no memory after going missing for 40 days and 40 nights.
The production, which features more than 1,000 members of the community as well as a small professional cast, has brought the world’s media to the small steel town. It is due to culminate tonight with a crucifixion.
“Port Talbot has never seen anything like this and I don’t think Wales has seen anything like this,” said Meyrick, a professional Jack Nicholson lookalike who is among the community cast members.
“This is an enormous project and Michael has been working 24/7 here in Port Talbot for 13 weeks in the run-up to the opening.”
