Some stage sets are more ambitious than others, but Michael Sheen is using an entire town as the backdrop for his labour of love.
He is returning to Port Talbot to star in The Passion, a unique one-off theatre event that will be performed continuously over the Easter weekend.
Now National Theatre Wales has released details of where in the town The Passion will be staged.
Michael will be joined by 14 professional actors from Port Talbot and Neath for the three-day performance from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, but in total the play will be supported by 1,000 cast members, groups and others.
Inspired by Port Talbot’s once traditional passion play, The Passion depicts the town taken over by authoritarian forces.
“It’s a three-day, non-stop production that starts on the afternoon of Good Friday and ends on Easter Sunday,” said a National Theatre Wales spokeswoman.
“Across the weekend there will be programmed events which run only once. But around these key events there will be constant unscheduled activity.”
The Passion, written by Owen Sheers, is co-directed by Michael Sheen and Bill Mitchell.
Good Friday will see the action confined to Aberavon Beach, but on the Saturday there will be sequences in Llewellyn Street, the Castle Street underpass, Aberafan Shopping Centre and the Seaside Social and Labour Club in Sandfields, along and its car park, and nearby Abbeyville Court.
On the Sunday there will be performances at Llewellyn Street and Station Road before the production returns to Aberavon Beach for the finale.
Most of the scenes are free, but people can buy wristbands to guarantee the best views.
There is a separate ticketed event for one scene, The Supper, taking place on the Saturday night. As this is likely to be oversubscribed there will be a draw to allocate tickets.
The cost of the wristbands is reduced for Port Talbot residents.
“Audiences can choose to attend one, some, or all of the weekend events and may catch some unexpected surprises,” added the spokeswoman.
