Stephenie Meyer's The Host Acquired by Open Road

Although Stephenie Meyer may be primarily known as the author of The Twilight Saga, she's also explored the sci-fi genre (though admittedly not straying too far from the romance angle that's worked so well for her) with The Host. The film version has just been acquired by Open Road, which is owned by theatre chains AMC and Regal.

Andrew Niccol will be directing and the film is set to star Hannah's Saoirse Ronan as Melanie Stryder.

Deadline, which has the exclusive report on the Open Road acquisition, describes the plot as follows: "[Melanie Stryder is] one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls, parasites that invade human bodies, fuse to each person's consciousness and systematically erase their personalities. Melanie is captured by the aliens and implanted by a Soul called Wanderer. While Wanderer's goal is to get Melanie to give up the remaining pockets of humans, the alien finds Melanie to be unique in her unwillingness to surrender her consciousness. Wanderer is so overwhelmed by Melanie's memories and feelings that she is driven to reconnect with Melanie's old life, which includes falling for Melanie’s boyfriend. The result is a complex, romantic and emotional human/alien love triangle."

Deadline reports:
EXCLUSIVE: Andrew Niccol has been set as the director of The Host, directing his scripted adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer.

The project, which is being shopped here at Cannes by Inferno Entertainment and producers Nick Wechsler and Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz, will star Saoirse Ronan.

After resisting overtures to sell the book, Meyer finally entrusted it with the producers, who gave her strong creative input. She chose Niccol originally because she was a fan of his film Gattaca and script for The Truman Show. While Niccol adapted the book into the current script, he exited to make the film Now, which he has completed with Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy starring. The producers went down the road with several directors, but talks with Niccol to return started heating up in recent weeks. Ronan ramped up interest in the film when she was set to star.

Ronan will play Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls. These parasites invade human bodies, fuse to each person's consciousness and systematically erase their personalities. The story follows Melanie as she is captured by the aliens and implanted by a Soul called Wanderer, something of a legend because of all of the "hosts" she has attached to on numerous planets. Wanderer's goal is to get Melanie to give up the remaining pockets of humans, but instead the alien finds Melanie to be unique in her unwillingness to surrender her consciousness. Wanderer is so overwhelmed by Melanie's memories and feelings that she is driven to reconnect with Melanie's old life, which includes falling for Melanie’s boyfriend. The result is a complex, romantic and emotional human/alien love triangle.

EXCLUSIVE: Saoirse Ronan has been set to star in The Host, the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer. Scripted by Andrew Niccol, the film figures to be one of the hot titles when Inferno launches sales at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival next week. Niccol, who was originally set to direct, might resurface as the filmmaker.

Ronan, the Oscar-nominated star of Atonement, The Lovely Bones and most recently Hanna, will play Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls. These parasites invade human bodies, fuse to each person's consciousness and systematically erase their personalities. Melanie is captured by the aliens and implanted by a Soul called Wanderer, something of a legend because of all of the "hosts" she has attached to on numerous planets. *****UPDATED*****

A new director has been chosen and announced for the book-to-film adaptation of Twilight series author Stephenie Meyer's The Host, and it is Susannah White.

Per Variety, "Nick Wechsler will produce the indie through his eponymous banner, along with Chockstone Pictures' Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz." This, too, is a development, since the last news on the matter from April, 2010 showed no studio attachment at the time. However, the producers remain the same ones who've been on board since the earliest announcement of the film.

Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show, Gattaca), who has written the adapted screenplay for the film, was long presumed to be the shoe-in for director of The Host. However, he's got a couple of other new projects in the works now that may have changed these plans (namely, Dali & I: The Surreal Story and The City That Sailed).

Susannah White has experience directing both television and films, with such work under her belt as Nanny McPhee Returns, Generation Kill (which Kellan Lutz starred in), The Diary Of A Nobody, and Jane Eyre.

LA Acting Auditions Examiner reports: Stephenie Meyer's "The Host" is currently in pre-production with filming set to start in early 2011. Source.
In September 2009, producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz, and Paula Mae Schwartz used independent financing to acquire the rights to adapt The Host into a film.
The Host was a #1 New York Times Best Seller, and remained on the list for 26 weeks, and also spent over 36 weeks on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. This film is expected to be the first of three in a trilogy. The sequels will be titled "The Soul" and "The Seeker".
Stephenie Meyer has said that she casts actors for the roles in her head when she writes. She stated that with "Twilight", she felt the actors needed to be up-and-coming artists that haven't been recognized yet. With "The Host" she thinks the lead actors could be A-List talent. She names Robert Redford, Ben and Casey Affleck, and Matt Damon as actors that she would like to see star in the film.

Stephanie Meyer’s huge success with the Twilight Saga has continued with the The Host.

Variety is reporting that producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have used their own money to acquire screen rights to the movie, with Andrew Niccol to write the script and direct.

“We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions,” Wechsler said. “Twilight” has “proven she knows more about what works than most.”

Stephanie Meyer also expressed her excitement on her website:

I’m so excited to be working with Nick Wechsler, and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz to bring The Host to a visual format. They’ve all been a dream to work with, so lovely and collaborative, and I feel like we’re in a really good place to make a great movie together. And then to have Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly awesome. If you’ve never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I’m having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn’t take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I’m looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.

So, very exciting. Yay Host!
