Forks Prepping for Annual Stephenie Meyer Day

Thanks to our Elite Affiliate Twilight Lexicon for this tip!!

Each year Forks puts on a Stephenie Meyer themed celebration to coincide with the weekend closest to Bella’s September 13th birthday. This year they have their own website http://stepheniemeyerday.com/ Where they are rapidly filling in the details of the weekend.

The town of Forks has also made some rather necessary and practical changes to handle the influx of visitors. According to the Forks, Washington blog “The members of West End Business & Professional Association and Forks Chamber of Commerce have gone in together on two Sanicans placed downtown for the summer tourists. Merchants in the area of the stoplight had been complaining about Twilight visitors using their restrooms which are usually back in store rooms and not meant for public use.

So a regular sanican was delivered first and when the folks at West Waste and Recycling delivered the second one it had a custom paint job, I call it the “Twilight Twoilet.”

If you are heading to Forks. Be sure and check out the following websites

Chris Cook of The Forks Forum Has New Book

Chris Cook is the editor of the Forks Forum newspaper. We had the opportunity to meet him a few years ago, and he’s a really great guy. He knows so much about Forks history, but what’s more important is that he’s a great storyteller. Chris has a new book out (he already has what we consider to be the best Twilight Guide to Forks). Check out the press release.

The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Forks from local authors Larry Burtness, Chris Cook, and the Forks Timber Museum. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by.

Forks is a community rich in logging heritage. Situated on a prairie between the forks of rivers, the town sits amidst the beauty of the vast rain forest of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula’s west end.

Settled in the mid-1870s by pioneer homesteading farmers, Forks’s name reflects its location at the confluence of the Calawah, Bogachiel, and Sol Duc Rivers. The town’s annual average rainfall of approximately 120 inches is legendary, making it the rainiest incorporated city in the contiguous states.

Forks is a hub for Olympic Peninsula visitors, drawn by world-class salmon and steelhead fishing and by the wonders of the Olympic National Park and the sea stack–lined Pacific Coast. Most recently, Forks has made a name for itself as the home to vampires and werewolves in Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling Twilight series.

Highlights of Forks:
• The pioneers
• Early logging years
• Becoming a town
• Transportation
• World War II and postwar

Forks ponders what dawn will break after Twilight hype wanes

What happens after Twilight? The concern over the possibility of a dwindling of the phenomenon -- and its tourist revenue -- dominated a question-and-answer hour with Mayor Bryon Monohon at the Forks Chamber of Commerce meeting Wednesday. Several of the some 25 people at the meeting questioned whether Monohon and the city were bracing for the inevitable decrease in tourism after the hype over the teen novels is over. Since 2007, tens of thousands of fans have visited Forks to view the setting of the four novels by Stephenie Meyer -- Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. The books were subsequently made into blockbuster movies, creating even more buzz over the rainy town. With visitation down by about 7 percent in November and December last year, the town is contemplating what the future holds, Monohon said. Read more.

CNN: Five Great Movie Locations to Visit

Share Your Thoughts (0)

CNN has a list of five great movie locations to visit. Twilight is on the list and is especially prominent in their photo gallery. Minor point is that they feature Forks and La Push and don’t have a single photo up of any actual filming location in Portland, Vancouver, or Montepulciano. We suppose it’s the thought that counts.
“3. “Twilight” series, Washington state
The Forks, Washington, area has turned into “Twilight” heaven. Visitors can enjoy dinner at Bella Italia in Port Angeles, where Edward and Bella had their first date; stop by Forks Outfitters, where Bella worked; and travel to Forks High School, where the two first met (rumored to be the filming location for the school scenes.)
Additionally, the area boasts stand-in homes of the Swans and Cullens and motels such as the Dew Drop Inn, complete with “Bella’s suite” featuring black and red bedding.”

Forks High School Facade Too Expensive to Save

The original building of the Forks High School campus that dated back to the 1920′s was taken down earlier this year. When we were in Forks last year, one of the school staff members told us about how difficult is was to maintain the aging building. Just to heat it barely effectively they had to crank up an aging and inefficient system at 3:00am. Even then, the students were still wearing coats in the building.
Originally, it was hoped that the historic facade could be preserved, but this now seems impractical. According to the Penninsula Daily News:
“The School Board was hoping to incorporate the front of the building — left standing when the rest of the condemned structure was demolished last summer — into the design of the new campus.
The facade would have been left as a stand-alone structure as a part of a grand entrance to the school.
The brick design of the leaky old building figures heavily in the descriptions of the Twilight saga, which has propelled Forks and the West End to worldwide acclaim.
But saving the facade would cost $271,000 on top of the $12.2 million construction bid accepted Friday, and its just not feasible to spend the money that way, said Bill Rohde, School Board president.”

'Twilight'-Inspired Forks Reality Show: More Details Revealed

Greetings from Thessaloniki!!
hollywoodcrush.mtv.com has interesting details...

Last week we pondered what a Forks, Washington-set reality show would look like (hello, "Fork of Love") after word came a reality TV producer was headed to the small logging community for casting. Well, we don't have to imagine so hard anymore because a few details about the proposed series have come to light.

Producer Zig Gauthier told The Wrap that the goal of the as-yet untitled series is "to peel back another layer of the onion that is Forks and see what the real people there are like." And by real, he means people who aren't vampires or werewolves (bummer!).

"We're not going up there looking to cast people who have claims to the supernatural," Zig explained. "We want people who have a true connection to the community. We want to avoid people with outlandish claims."

The exact premise of the show has yet to be decided, with Zig saying he wants to hold off until casting is complete and potential networks have had a chance to throw in their two cents. Potential concepts could include a "Laguna Beach"-type series where cameras follow a group of Forks high schoolers or something more family focused a la "The Real Housewives."

Part of me thinks producers could train a camera on a blade of Forks grass for fives months and the most rabid of "Twilight" fans would tune in. But the other part of me thinks that the allure of the vampire series is its supernatural aspects and, of course, our friends Bella, Edward and Jacob. Without those integral components, perhaps this producer is barking up the wrong tree, Spider Monkey.

Do these new details about the proposed Forks reality show make you more excited? Or are you holding off judgment until you see the finished product?
