Summit Executives, Melissa Rosenberg, and Chris Weitz Give Credit To Harry Potter Films

Evening All,
Thanks to our Elite Affie Twilight Lexicon for the Tip! See more on USA Today
Erik Feig(a Summit Executive), Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight Saga screenwriter) and Chris Weitz (the director of The Golden Compass, New Moon and A Better Life) have cited the Harry Potter films as industry inspirations and changers. In the above photo, taken at the A Better Life premiere, Erik Feig is standing to Chris Weitz’s immediate left:
Erik Feig:
‘”There was a sea change with Harry Potter,” says Erik Feig, president of worldwide production at Summit Entertainment, which has made the Twilight movies. “The story has a younger protagonist, but the book series and the movies are greatly enjoyed by older people, too. I devoured the first book and gave it to every grown-up I knew. We saw the same thing with Twilight. We did not ghetto-ize it as a young-adult movie. Nor did they with Harry Potter. They drew all audiences. It was an inspiration to us.”
Chris Weitz:
“The impact of the Potter series has been tremendous in that it has essentially become the idea of a modern franchise,” says director Chris Weitz (Twilight: New Moon; The Golden Compass). “They latched onto something that has its own sequels built in. Now everyone is looking for a literary property that extends enough for them to keep on building.
“It’s led to this speculative bubble in mystical young-adult fiction. Twilight found its own way to hit upon the hunger for the supernatural and a particular time of life. But if you look at the bookshelves now, half of what is coming out in (young-adult) fiction is about a werewolf or a vampire or angels or demons. The other half is about magic and wizardry.”
Melissa Rosenberg:
“The Harry Potter filmmakers and screenwriter Steve Kloves really respected the fans,” says Melissa Rosenberg, who has written the screenplay for each Twilight movie. “When you’re adapting a book series and you have that kind of fan base, you really have to deliver. You can’t just use the books as a jumping-off basis for another story. When I see a Harry Potter movie, I forget what is missing. Because Kloves is taking me and those kids on the same emotional journey as the book does.”

Chris Weitz And 'A Better Life' Screening

Hey Everyone,
Chris Weitz's A Better Live had a screening last night...Huffington Post posted an article about it!
Thanks to our friends Twilightish for the Tip! Enjoy!

"I’ve lived in Los Angeles for twenty years, and I feel like I’ve never really known it," said Academy Award nominated Chris Weitz, at the screening of his new film "A Better Life." "There are so many microcosms that you drive past at forty miles per hour, and once you stop, and take the time to meet people, it is a really extraordinary. Los Angeles is a really beautiful place."
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 2011 graduating class of the Gertz-Ressler High School, and over three hundred guests joined the cast, producers and Weitz to celebrate the film's upcoming release. The screening, hosted by HuffPost's Arianna Huffington and Willow Bay, took place at the Museum of Tolerance in Beverly Hills.
The film focuses on Carlos Galindo (Bichir), a single father, gardener, and undocumented immigrant trying to ensure a good life for his American born teenage son. Galindo's struggles, as well as those facing his family and community, are presented against the backdrop of a Los Angeles that is still full of promise, yet unforgiving. "[Los Angeles] is another character, we need to tell that story too," said Bichir. Producer Stacey Lubliner echoed this sentiment: "this movie really became a love letter to Los Angeles."
Summit Entertainment's "A Better Life" premieres on June 21 at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

If you're not already following The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz on Twitter, here's yet another reason why you should. As of now until the end of March, Weitz will be donating $1 for each tweet he sends to the Red Cross for Japan relief efforts.

He's already donated $1,500 toward Japanese aide as a mini-contest prize (for a clever haiku submission) via Twitter, and he's been spending an awful lot of his time communicating with his fans on the social networking site on a range of subjects, especially Twilight and A Better Life, his new, forthcoming film due June 24th.

Hi Everyone,

The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz, recently joined Twitter.
He was on tonight and answered questions from fans. Thanks to Twilightish for the tip. Enjoy!

@heyitsdani@chrisweitz what do you think about water for elephants' trailer, new Robert Pattinson movie
That's my boy right there. Looks lovely. I'm in line 1st weekend.

@momsenstew@chrisweitz What did you think of Welcome To The Riley's with KStew? :)
As I've said, I think Kristen is one of the best actresses of her generation. She can do no wrong in my book. But the mouth on that kid ;)

Twi Ass rhymes with "My Ass"! Don't hate on the Kstew.

@JodieO@chrisweitz When you agreed to direct New Moon did you realize you would be answering Rob and Kristen questions for the next 45 years?
If that guarantees me 45 more years of life, sure.

@mystyna@chrisweitz Favorite song from new moon soundtrack?
The Bon Iver... or the Tom Yorke...

@lolaknown@chrisweitz Which cuss word did Kristen utter when she had to put on the vampire laura ingles dress on NM? Do tell!
It should have been, "Chris, this is a f-cking stupid idea for a scene".

@NikiMarieR@chrisweitz Umm... did Taylor Lautner diss you? Why aren't you talking about him? :p ...or are you trying to help promote current movies?
Taylor and I are v. cool -- just texted him a restaurant recommendation. He only eats charred meat at the moment.

@AmandaNicolette@chrisweitz Most difficult scene to shoot in New Moon? :)
What we liked to call "The roundy-round scene" (depression cgi change of seasons)

@liSita80@chrisweitz What was the funniest thing that happened on the set of New Moon?
When I tried to prove to Kristen that it would be easy to shoot her underwater scene by going 10 feet underwater with wights on my wetsuit and panicked.

@Browneyedgirl_68 @chrisweitz Which wld u say is easier, 2 b screenwriter or Director? Was there anything in NM that you wish could've changed in hindsight?
Directing is more fun because you get to stride around acting important, but everyone asks you questions all the time. Writing is more relaxing, but I get tired of my own company.

@tinkrbe1l3@chrisweitz what happened to that kissing scene Chris...the one OUTSIDE in Montepulciano? (still love what u did with NM :))
Oh. Well, even with R+K, too much of a good thing...

@and78@chrisweitz Anyone ever baked you a loquat pie?
Are you kidding? When do people NOT bake me loquat pies? Love'em.

@caitlin71Ann@chrisweitz were you sad that you got stuck with the most depressing twilight saga book to direct?
No! I love gloomy! See About a Boy!

@robzsinger1@chrisweitz Is Rob even more dreamy in person? do tell. ;)
He is so dreamy that I am sometimes asleep while talking to him.

@fridiuks@chrisweitz Which twilight charater would you play in a Twilight movie???
I'm sort of a Mike. Or a Gran. Or maybe Jane. Yeah, she's badass.
