CNN Reports: Can ‘Wolfman’ Destroy Vampire Fever?

In the article they also discuss Taylor Lautner and New Moon -
Until Taylor Lautner beefed up and began walking around shirtless in “New Moon,” there wasn’t a chance in the underworld that werewolves could steal pop culture’s rabid affection for vampires. But now that moviegoers’ appetites have been whetted for this particularly hairy breed of supernatural beast, perhaps the new horror movie “The Wolfman,” starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, can help the myth finally step out from the, er, non-shadow of vampires after all.
n the past 30 years, there have been a number of films dedicated to the frightening — and sometimes hilarious — things that can happen when under the werewolf curse, yet the genre has never soared into popularity. We’re officially past “New Moon” frenzy, and werewolves haven’t exactly shown up in TV series, novels and other movies the same way vampirism has since “Twilight” and its cohorts left their mark.
“Vampires have always been more popular because there’s a romantic element,” Slantmagazine.com film critic Nick Schager said. “They’re striking, dashing, and there are sexual components to the legend.”

New Moon Visual Effects Lecture at Museum of Science in Boston

From the Museum of Boston website:
Depicting the snarl of a werewolf, the sparkling skin of a vampire, or a handsome apparition were all in a day’s work for the visual effects supervisors who worked on The Twilight Saga: New Moon. These masters of technology were charged with bringing the latest movie installment of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel to the big screen.
Matt Jacobs and his team at Tippett Studio created New Moon’s realistic-looking wolves with computer-generated imagery (CGI), a process that included getting up close and personal with fanged timberwolves at a California preserve in order to study their looks, movements, and behavior. The task of creating most of the other visual effects in the film, including the diamond-like shimmering of vampire skin coming into contact with sunlight, fell to Eric Pascarelli and his team at Prime Focus VFX. The source of their inspiration? Greek Thassos marble.
With behind-the-scenes stories and film clips demonstrating the process, these masters of technology, both from award-winning visual effects studios in California, illustrate how creativity and science combine to convey emotion, create drama, and bring New Moon to life.
Seating is limited. Seating passes are available to the general public in the Museum lobby beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the evening of the program; first come, first served. Museum members may reserve a limited number of seating passes in advance by calling between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday the week of the program only: 617-589-3169.
The lecture is free! If you are in the area and plan to attend, let us know .

Kirsten Prout, Lucy in Eclipse, Talks about Fangs & Jackson’s Hair
Nineteen-year-old Canadian born actress Kirsten Prout, in her biggest role to date, plays the vampire Lucy in the The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Her character will be in the flashbacks that tell the backstory of Jasper and how he was created. She says they picked actors who’s teath stand out since there are no fangs!
This is a portion of an interview she gave to iesb about her role in Eclipse:
Q: How did you get involved with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse? Was it just a regular audition?
Kirsten: Yeah, it was just a regular audition. I had just come off of two films, and it was after Kyle XY, which was a television show I worked on for three years. I had been working on it for so long and, before that, I hadn’t taken a real break because I had been working steadily since I was 10 years old. So, at the end of Kyle XY, which also happen to coincide with the end of my high school career, I decided to go off to University and leave the industry. I went for a year to McGill University and I majored in English literature, and I took all my advanced classes that I prepared for in high school, and I had a great time there. I got straight A’s and was on the honor roll. But then, when I came back to Vancouver during the summer, I went for an audition because it was what I was used to doing, and I booked it. And then, I booked something right after that was a mini-series that would shoot into the school year. So, at that point, I decided to put off going back to University.
I had just come off of two shows and, in between filming them, I had gone for Eclipse. I read for a different vampire, called Bree, who is a brunette with short, short hair that is 13 years old and completely not me, but I went for the audition just because it was a big project. I can tell you that I’ve never felt that level of nervousness in an audition room, in my whole career. I had read the books, but it hadn’t really sunk in what a huge phenomenon Twilight was. I went into it and it was an important audition, but I wasn’t really nervous. I was just focusing on my work, but a lot of people were just so stressed out. I went to the audition room, and then I heard back about the audition that I was wrong for the character, but they wanted me to come back for another vampire that was essentially the same size role and everything, except she had long blonde hair, was extremely pale and was older. So I went in, did one audition and a week later, I got a call and then showed up on set. It was pretty rapid. I only had one audition for it because I’d already auditioned for another character and they’d seen what I could do.

'Eclipse' Is Coming In June, And Here's What We're Hoping Will Sell It To A Wider Audience
While "New Moon" has certainly accrued fan approval and box office power since its release on November 20, critics haven't had the same appreciation for the vampire romance. "Eclipse," the next in the series, wrapped in October and is slated for a June 30, 2010 release, we have a few suggestions to help make it a film everyone -- not just Twilighters -- will enjoy.
Amp up the Bella and Edward romance
"Twilight" established the potent romance between Bella and Edward, but "New Moon" sacrificed much of the chemistry for the sake of Bella's growing bond with Jacob. Granted, the reason why Edward was mostly absent during "New Moon" was because he broke up with Bella and was moping around in an apartment for months on end, but Chris Weitz forgot to reestablish why exactly Bella and Edward were so in love. With "Eclipse," we hope David Slade explores their connection, especially with so many fans jumping ship to Team Jacob after seeing Taylor Lautner's abs.
Expand the secondary characters
Even though Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are the biggest draws for most fans, secondary characters like Anna Kendrick's Jessica, Mike Welch's Mike Newton, Dakota Fanning's Jane and Michael Sheen's Aro were key to some of the most fun parts of "New Moon." "Eclipse" introduces a whole slew of new characters (Riley and Leah, anyone?) and we hope some of the old favorites aren't sacrificed for the new, especially with Anna Kendrick's potential Oscar win for "Up in the Air." Plus, there's the fact that the scenes in which Bella interacts with humans (like her father, played by Billy Burke, and the high school students) are some of the most interesting and well-acted in the series thus far.
Make the fight scenes more action-packed
Yes, we understand that a lot of care went into making the CGI werewolves in "New Moon," and thank goodness the fight scenes in the second "Twilight" installment were better than the first, but the final battle in "Eclipse" is the most action-packed part of the entire "Twilight Saga." With David Slade's previous vampire film "30 Days of Night" under his belt, we can expect some intense action, but we'd like to remind him we want to see some newborn vamps being torn limb from limb anyways (and not just in slow motion).

Cullen Confession
Jackson: I was lucky to be coming off another film where I was doing a lot of kung fu training and fight training, so I was kind of in the mood to keep fighting. And it was a lot of fun to figure out the choreography with the stunt coordinators and everyone. You know, emotionally I was holding back everything in TwilightNew Moon you get to see me kind of let it go. and in
Jackson: It’s mostly me. When you actually see the guy hit the piano, that is not me, that was the stunt guy. They wouldn’t let me break the piano. I kind of wanted to, but at the same time I don’t really condone the destruction of baby grands!
Nikki: I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say we’ve all seen a vampire or two throughout the years, but we couldn’t use them as an example because we’re not playing, like hidden creatures. Stephanie wrote really unconventional vampires. We co-exist with the rest of the world, so I think the biggest challenge was – with all of the hair and makeup and wardrobe that makes you feel like you stand out so much – finding a way to blend in with all of that.
Kellan: We’re all very different. That’s what makes it fun about acting is we each bring our own attitude towards our characters, so when you’re shooting a scene you can actually react instead of rehearsing. You know, who’s going to say what you should express? It’s all very real and in the moment. This rag-tag family of vampires really works. We all come from different areas of life – different timelines, different generations, so we’ve been living together for a while but we’re all very different. Stephanie’s story is informed, though, so most of the work was already done for us.

Charlie Bewley of 'New Moon' on snowboarding, red contact lenses, and close fan encounters in Italy
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Have you been recognized more often?
CHARLIE BEWLEY: I don’t think so. Nothing’s really changed for me—I think it’s more of an online buzz right now. I expect maybe before Christmas that everyone would see this movie and if they keep their eyes peeled, they’ll notice me in it. I don’t expect the same adulation as people like, even Kellan [Lutz] or Ashley [Greene]. I think they got the second wave of everything after Taylor, Rob, and Kristen. But it’s still wonderful to be part of. It’s opened many doors for me.
How did you get the part?
I was auditioning in Vancouver. You know like any actor is before they hit something, I was waiting tables, bartending, hoping something great would come around. Sure enough, New Moon pops up. Back in the end of January, they came to town because they switched the production from Oregon to Vancouver, so luckily enough they were casting the roles up there.
What did you bring to the role of Demetri?
Certainly based on all the information that I dragged out of the books and certain websites, I went in [to the audition] with my best interpretation of what I though Demetri was. I’m actually quite far removed from the character in terms of his physical attributes in the book. But I think the essence I brought to the audition was what got me the role: I brought the charm and at the same time, the sinister aspect of the character.
What was it like wearing the red contacts?
Well the more angelic you look, the more unnerving you are as someone wearing those red contact lenses. They really do bring you into that evil character.

'New Moon' director Chris Weitz: 'This was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don't get it'
CHRIS WEITZ: I didn’t have any particular fears. The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.
New Moon takes a lot of time to read and you have a lot of time without Edward in the picture. And here in the compressed scenario of the movie, there is less time without RPatz. And the fact that Taylor [Lautner] does such a great job, to the reading audience who’s been very skeptical of him, here he is in the flesh, and it’s quite something.
